Kartika Purnima / କାର୍ତ୍ତିକ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା

Kartika Purnima, celebrated on the full moon day of the holy month of Kartika, is one of the most sacred and culturally profound festivals of Odisha. Historically, this festival marks Boita Bandana (worshipping of ships), commemorating the rich maritime history of ancient Kalinga. Sea traders known as Sadhabas set sail to Southeast Asian island nations like Bali, Java, Sumatra, and Borneo for trade on this auspicious day, benefiting from favorable seasonal wind directions.

At dawn, devotees gather along riverbanks, tanks, and sea beaches—notably at the Mahanadi River, Puri sea beach, Bindusagar lake, and Gadagadia Ghat—to take a ceremonial bath (Kartika Snana). People float decorated miniature boats made of banana stem (kadali pata), solapith, or paper carrying betel leaves (pana), betel nuts (gua), uncooked rice, marigold flowers, and lighted earthen lamps (dipa). Devotees sing the iconic folk chant "Aa Ka Ma Boi, Pana Gua Thoi, Pana Gua Khai Tor Muna Mo Muna Bayi", invoking blessings for prosperity and safe maritime journeys.

The festival also marks the conclusion of the month-long Kartika Vrata, Rasa Purnima, and the grand inauguration of the famous Bali Jatra open-air trade fair on the riverbanks of the Mahanadi in Cuttack. Across coastal and inland districts such as Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Ganjam, temples witness immense crowds for Panchuka rituals, Lord Jagannath's Rajarajeshwara Besha (Suna Besha) in Puri, and Deva Deepawali.

କାର୍ତ୍ତିକ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ହେଉଛି ପବିତ୍ର କାର୍ତ୍ତିକ ମାସର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ତିଥିରେ ପାଳିତ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଅନ୍ୟତମ ଶ୍ରେଷ୍ଠ ଓ ସଂସ୍କୃତିସମ୍ପନ୍ନ ପର୍ବ। ଏହି ଦିନ ପ୍ରାଚୀନ କଳିଙ୍ଗର ଗୌରବମୟ ନୌବାଣିଜ୍ୟ ପରମ୍ପରାକୁ ସ୍ମରଣ କରି ‘ବୋଇତ ବନ୍ଦାଣ’ ଉତ୍ସବ ପାଳନ କରାଯାଏ। ପୁରାକାଳରେ ସାଧବ ପୁଅମାନେ ବାଣିଜ୍ୟ ଉଦ୍ଦେଶ୍ୟରେ ବାଲି, ଜାଭା, ସୁମାତ୍ରା ଓ ବୋର୍ଣ୍ଣିଓ ଭଳି ଦକ୍ଷିଣ-ପୂର୍ବ ଏସୀୟ ଦ୍ୱୀପଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ ଶୁଭ ଅନୁକୂଳ ପବନର ସାହାଯ୍ୟ ନେଇ ସମୁଦ୍ର ଯାତ୍ରା କରୁଥିଲେ।

ପ୍ରତ୍ୟୁଷରୁ ଶ୍ରଦ୍ଧାଳୁମାନେ ନଦୀ, ପୁଷ୍କରିଣୀ, ବିନ୍ଦୁସାଗର ଓ ସମୁଦ୍ରକୂଳରେ ‘କାର୍ତ୍ତିକ ସ୍ନାନ’ କରି କଦଳୀ ପଟୁଆ, ଶୋଲ ଓ କାଗଜରେ ତିଆରି ସୁସଜ୍ଜିତ ଛୋଟ ଡଙ୍ଗାରେ ପାନ, ଗୁଆ, ଚାଉଳ, ଫୁଲ ଓ ସଲିତା ଦୀପ ରଖି ଜଳରେ ଭସାଇଥାନ୍ତି। ଏହି ସମୟରେ “ଆ କା ମା ବୋଇ, ପାନ ଗୁଆ ଥୋଇ, ପାନ ଗୁଆ ଖାଇ ତୋର ମୁହଁ ମୋ ମୁହଁ ବାଆଁ” ଗୀତ ଗାଇ ସମୃଦ୍ଧି ଓ ମଙ୍ଗଳ କାମନା କରାଯାଏ।

ଏହି ସୁପବିତ୍ର ତିଥିରେ ମାସବ୍ୟାପୀ ଚାଲିଥିବା ‘କାର୍ତ୍ତିକ ବ୍ରତ’ ଓ ‘ପଞ୍ଚୁକ’ ସମାପ୍ତ ହୁଏ। ପୁରୀ ଶ୍ରୀମନ୍ଦିରରେ ମହାପ୍ରଭୁ ଶ୍ରୀଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କର ‘ରାଜରାଜେଶ୍ୱର ବେଶ’ (ସୁନାବେଶ) ଅନୁଷ୍ଠିତ ହୁଏ ଏବଂ କଟକର ମହାନଦୀ କୂଳ ଗଡ଼ଗଡ଼ିଆ ઘାଟରେ ଐତିହାସିକ ‘ବାଲିଯାତ୍ରା’ ଆରମ୍ଭ ହୁଏ। କଟକ, ପୁରୀ, ଖୋର୍ଦ୍ଧା, ଜଗତସିଂହପୁର, କେନ୍ଦ୍ରାପଡ଼ା, ଗଞ୍ଜାମ ଆଦି ଜିଲ୍ଲାରେ ଏହି ପର୍ବ ଅତ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଆଡ଼ମ୍ବରପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଭାବେ ପାଳନ କରାଯାଏ।
