About Durga Puja

Durga Puja is one of the most significant Hindu festivals celebrated during the Hindu month of Ashwin, generally falling in September or October. The festival honours Goddess Durga and commemorates her victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

Across Odisha, Durga Puja brings communities together through religious rituals, beautifully crafted idols, elaborate pandals, cultural programmes and festive gatherings. Homes, streets and neighbourhoods take on a celebratory atmosphere as devotees visit pandals to offer prayers and seek the blessings of Goddess Durga.

Cuttack is particularly famous for its magnificent Durga Puja celebrations, featuring intricate silver filigree decorations known as *Chandi Medha*. Bhubaneswar is known for its artistically designed pandals and large community celebrations. In Puri, the festival is associated with the distinctive Gosani Jatra, which showcases traditional forms of Goddess Durga through processions and artistic displays.

The main observances include Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Vijaya Dashami, although specific rituals and celebration schedules vary by region and tradition. Vijaya Dashami marks the conclusion of the main festival and symbolises the victory of righteousness. The festival reflects Odisha's rich religious heritage, traditional craftsmanship and strong spirit of community participation.

Durga Puja offers visitors an opportunity to experience Odisha's spiritual traditions, artistic creativity and festive culture across its cities and towns.
