Puri Is One of India’s Four Char Dham Pilgrimage Sites

Puri’s Jagannath Temple is one of the four major Char Dham pilgrimage destinations revered in Hindu tradition.

Puri holds a special place in Hindu pilgrimage because the Jagannath Temple is recognised as one of the four major Char Dham destinations. The traditional pilgrimage circuit also includes Badrinath, Dwarka and Rameswaram.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, worshipped alongside Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Its religious importance has shaped Puri’s identity as a major pilgrimage town and contributed to the city’s long-standing traditions of festivals, offerings and devotional gatherings.

The Char Dham connection also links Puri with pilgrimage routes extending across different regions of India. For Odisha, the temple is both a sacred destination and a central symbol of the state’s cultural heritage.
