The Aruna Stambha Originally Stood at Konark

The Aruna Stambha, the pillar in front of Jagannath Temple’s Lion Gate, is traditionally documented as having been relocated from Konark Sun Temple.

Standing in front of the Singhadwara, or Lion Gate, of Puri’s Jagannath Temple is the Aruna Stambha, a striking monolithic pillar associated with Aruna, the charioteer of the Sun God.

What makes it especially interesting is its connection with another famous Odisha monument. Odisha Tourism records that the pillar was originally located at the Konark Sun Temple before being moved to Puri.

The pillar creates a visible historical link between two of Odisha’s best-known sacred sites. It also highlights how monuments and architectural elements can acquire new settings and significance over time.

For visitors interested in architecture and history, the Aruna Stambha is worth noticing rather than simply passing on the way through the temple entrance area.
