Olive Ridley Turtles Gather on Odisha’s Coast

Odisha’s coast is important for Olive Ridley sea turtles, which gather in large numbers to nest at selected beaches.

Every year, Odisha’s coastline becomes an important nesting area for Olive Ridley sea turtles. Sites such as Gahirmatha and the Rushikulya river mouth are known for mass nesting, when large numbers of female turtles come ashore to lay eggs.

This natural event is remarkable, but it also highlights the need to protect marine wildlife. Artificial lights, plastic waste, disturbance on nesting beaches and other human activities can create risks for turtles and hatchlings.

Visitors should never touch or chase turtles, disturb nests, or leave litter behind. Following official instructions and respecting protected areas helps give these animals a better chance of survival.
