Odisha’s Odia Language Is One of India’s Classical Languages
Odia has a long literary heritage and is officially recognised as one of India’s classical languages.
Odia is more than the everyday language spoken across Odisha. It has a rich literary tradition, with historical manuscripts, poetry, devotional writing and works that reflect the region’s changing society and culture.
In 2014, the Government of India granted Odia the status of a classical language. The recognition highlights its long literary history and the importance of preserving its linguistic heritage.
For young Odias, the language connects modern life with centuries of storytelling, literature, music and cultural expression. Learning to read and write Odia is also one way to help keep that heritage alive for future generations.
