Mandasaru, in Kandhamal district, is recognised as a Biodiversity Heritage Site in Odisha. Located in the Eastern Ghats, this ecologically rich gorge supports a wide range of plants, animals, fungi and other organisms.

The Odisha Biodiversity Board documents 772 species of angiosperms, or flowering plants, and one gymnosperm at the site. Its documented diversity also includes ferns and their relatives, mosses, lichens and fungi. The recorded wildlife includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies and other invertebrates.

The gorge provides habitat for animals such as fishing cats and small-clawed otters. The Board also highlights distinctive plant life and species of conservation importance found in the area.

Mandasaru demonstrates that Odisha's biodiversity is not confined to its famous national parks and coastal wetlands. Smaller, ecologically significant landscapes can also preserve valuable natural heritage and support conservation research.
