Chilika Lake: A Home for Rare Dolphins

Chilika Lake is famous for its wildlife and is home to Irrawaddy dolphins, making it a remarkable destination for nature lovers.

Chilika Lake, spread across parts of Puri, Khordha and Ganjam districts, is Asia’s largest brackish-water lagoon. Its waters mix freshwater from rivers with seawater connected to the Bay of Bengal, creating a distinctive ecosystem.

One of Chilika’s most fascinating residents is the Irrawaddy dolphin. These dolphins have rounded heads and a distinctive appearance compared with many other dolphin species. The lagoon also attracts migratory birds and supports a rich variety of aquatic life.

Chilika is recognised as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Its dolphins and birdlife make it an exciting place for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers and students learning about conservation. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, and visitors should follow local boating and conservation guidance.
