Mangalajodi is a community-managed wetland and eco-tourism destination on the northern bank of Chilika Lagoon in Tangi Block of Khordha District, Odisha. The marshland is known for its large concentration of migratory waterbirds and guided boat journeys through narrow reed channels.

Mangalajodi is particularly significant for its community-led conservation story. The village transformed from an area associated with migratory bird poaching into a conservation-based tourism destination where former poachers became bird guides and boat operators. Visitors come primarily for bird watching, photography, quiet boat rides and the experience of a wetland protected through local participation.

Mangalajodi is not a formally notified National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act. Its conservation model is based on community management within the Chilika wetland landscape.

Mangalajodi Wetland

The Mangalajodi marshland forms the main attraction. Its shallow freshwater wetland, reed-filled channels and open water areas provide habitat for large numbers of resident and migratory birds.

During the winter migration period, the wetland can support 150,000 to more than 300,000 migratory waterfowl across more than 200 species.

Migratory Waterbirds

Mangalajodi is particularly rewarding during the November-to-March migration period, with peak activity during December and January.

Birds recorded in the wetland include Black-tailed Godwits, Northern Pintails, Purple Swamphens, Garganeys, Ruffs and Eurasian Wigeons.

Mangalajodi Nature Camp

Mangalajodi Nature Camp is located on a small hillock overlooking the marshland. The facility has 12 eco-cottages using materials including laterite stone, bamboo and local timber.

The Nature Camp also provides visitor facilities, food and access to guided wetland experiences.

Watchtowers and Earthen Embankment

A roughly 3-kilometre elevated earthen embankment passes through the freshwater marsh and leads towards the jetty. It provides access through the wetland landscape and connects with the area used for country-boat excursions.

Visitor Interpretation Centre

The visitor interpretation centre provides information about migratory birds, wetland ecology and avian migration routes.

Ugra Tara Temple

Ugra Tara Temple at Bhushanpur is approximately 10 km from Mangalajodi. The shrine is associated with Goddess Ugra Tara and provides a cultural and religious attraction near the wetland.

Go Bird Watching by Country Boat

The main Mangalajodi experience is a guided journey through narrow wetland channels in a hand-rowed wooden country boat. Each country boat is accompanied by a trained local bird guide.

A standard boat excursion lasts about two hours and generally accommodates four to five visitors.

Photograph Migratory Birds

The calm, non-motorized boat experience allows visitors to observe and photograph birds without the disturbance associated with motorboats.

Early morning and late afternoon provide the best combination of bird activity and natural lighting.

Walk Along the Wetland Embankment

Visitors can walk along the main earthen embankment without paying an entry fee. The elevated route provides access through the wetland landscape.

Mangalajodi offers an opportunity to see how local livelihoods have been connected with wetland conservation. Former bird poachers were trained as birding guides and boat operators between 2002 and 2010.

How to Reach

By Road

Mangalajodi can be reached from NH-16, the Bhubaneswar–Visakhapatnam highway. From the Chandpur/Tangi area, visitors take the paved rural road for approximately 6 km to reach Mangalajodi village.

Auto-rickshaws and private taxis are available from Tangi or Chandpur bus stops.

By Train

Tangi/Mukteswar Railway Station is approximately 8–10 km from Mangalajodi and provides one of the nearest railway access points.

Kalupara Ghat Railway Station is approximately 12 km away. Balugaon Railway Station, around 30 km away, is a major express-train stop.

By Air

Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar is approximately 68–75 km from Mangalajodi. The road journey takes around 1.5 hours via NH-16.

Best Time to Visit

November to February is the best period to visit Mangalajodi because winter coincides with peak migratory bird activity.

The broader migratory season generally extends from November to March, with December and January providing peak birding opportunities.

Winter Birding

Winter temperatures generally range from 12°C to 26°C. The wetland attracts large numbers of migratory waterbirds, making this the preferred season for bird watching and photography.

Summer

March to June is warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from approximately 28°C to 38°C. Bird numbers decline as migratory species return to their northern breeding grounds.

Monsoon

July to September brings high rainfall, with the annual rainfall range around 1,200–1,400 mm. Water levels rise and the character of the marshland changes substantially.

Best Time of Day for Bird Watching

Early morning from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and late afternoon from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM are the preferred times for bird activity and photography.

Visitor Timings & Entry Information

Mangalajodi is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

There is no entry fee for walking along the main embankment.

Wetland entry by boat requires a non-motorized country boat. The community-managed tariff is approximately ₹1,200–₹1,800 per boat for two hours, with a capacity of four to five visitors. The boating charge includes a trained local bird guide.

Motorized boats are prohibited inside the shallow marshland.

Visitors must remain quiet during boat tours and avoid shouting, playing music or making sudden movements that could disturb birds.

Drone photography requires written permission from the Divisional Forest Officer of the Chilika Wildlife Division.

There are no ATMs inside Mangalajodi village. ATMs are available in Tangi, approximately 8 km away. Carrying sufficient cash is advisable because mobile connectivity and UPI payments can be unstable around the marshlands.
