Chilika Lake: Travel Guide, Things to Do & Best Time

About Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake is a vast brackish-water coastal lagoon on the east coast of Odisha, extending across Khordha, Puri and Ganjam districts. Barkul and Balugaon are the principal visitor hubs on the western side, while Satapada provides access from the eastern sector. The lagoon combines wetland biodiversity, boating, bird watching, island exploration and cultural attractions such as Kalijai Temple.

Chilika is also a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and an important winter destination for migratory birds. Its cultural history extends from ancient maritime activity to the continuing religious traditions surrounding Goddess Kalijai. Visitors can explore the lagoon by boat, visit Kalijai Island, observe birds around designated areas and combine the trip with attractions such as Satapada and Nalabana.

The lagoon developed during the late Pleistocene and Holocene period as changing sea levels helped create an estuarine ecosystem separated from the Bay of Bengal by a sandy barrier spit. Ancient maritime connections are associated with Palur at the southern end of Chilika, while archaeological discoveries at Golabai Sasan provide evidence of ancient settlement and boat-building activity.

Chilika became India's first wetland designated under the Ramsar Convention in 1981. The Chilika Development Authority was established by the Government of Odisha for ecosystem restoration, and the lagoon was later removed from the Montreux Record in 2002 following ecological restoration efforts and the opening of a new sea mouth at Satapada.

Key Attractions & Things to See

Kalijai Temple and Kalijai Island

Kalijai Island is home to the temple of Goddess Kalijai, regarded as the protective deity of fishermen, boatmen and mariners navigating Chilika Lake. The island is reached by boat from Barkul or Balugaon and forms one of the most important pilgrimage attractions within the lagoon.

The temple was established in 1717 CE by Raja Jagannath Mansingh, King of Parikud. Traditional folklore tells the story of Jaia, a young girl who disappeared after a storm overturned her boat while she was travelling across Chilika. She was subsequently revered as Goddess Kalijai.

Nalabana Bird Sanctuary

Nalabana is a flooded island within Chilika and an important wintering area for migratory birds. Flamingos, pelicans and bar-headed geese are among the birds associated with the sanctuary.

Landing on the sanctuary island is restricted. Visitors can observe the surrounding bird habitat from boats outside the designated perimeter.

Satapada and the Dolphin Sanctuary

Satapada lies on the eastern side of Chilika and is known for Irrawaddy dolphin watching and the Sea Mouth, locally known as Muhan. It provides a separate visitor experience from the Barkul-Balugaon sector and can be incorporated into a wider Chilika itinerary.

Narayani Temple

Narayani Temple is a forest-surrounded sacred hill shrine near Balugaon. The temple is located in a scenic stream valley in the Salia dam foothill region.

Nirmaljhara

Nirmaljhara is a perennial mountain spring and temple complex near Khallikote. The heritage site is associated with a 16th-century temple complex built by the Jhored royal family.

Popular Activities & Things to Do

Visitors can take motorboat trips across Chilika Lake, travel to Kalijai Island and visit Kalijai Temple. Boat journeys also provide opportunities to experience the lagoon landscape and observe wetland birdlife.

Bird watching is particularly rewarding during winter, when migratory birds arrive at Nalabana and surrounding mudflats. The November-to-February period is associated with peak migratory bird activity.

Visitors can also explore the Barkul waterfront, enjoy local Chilika seafood, visit nearby attractions and plan a wider excursion towards Satapada.

The Makar Mela at Kalijai Island is another major experience. During Makar Sankranti, decorated boats carry large numbers of pilgrims to the island, where religious ceremonies, devotional music and a temporary fair take place.
